Anwar bringing down his whole family

Wan Azizah’s decision to appoint hubby as adviser spells end of reformasi

KUALA LUMPUR: It would be the end of PKR’s “reformasi”, if Selangor Menteri Besar hopeful Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail were to appoint her husband as consultant and adviser, say analysts.
Political analyst associate professor Dr Sivamurugan Pandian said PKR’s way of ousting Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim as menteri besar proved that they would go against the party’s belief just to get their way.
“A party which says its struggle is for accountability, transparency and competency is now against its own principles to topple Khalid,” he said.
Sivamurugan said PKR’s much touted reformation agenda would lose its credibility if Dr Wan Azizah insisted on appointing Anwar as her consultant and adviser in the event she was appointed as menteri besar.
With or without a position within the state government, he felt that the opposition leader would still remain as a main “political actor” in Selangor, adding that it could be a factor as to why Pas spiritual leader Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat and party president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang prefered Khalid to stay as menteri besar.
He also pointed out that Selangor would not need a menteri besar who relies on a consultant and adviser to make a decision.
“That would be the most distinct element about Khalid (as compared to Dr Wan Azizah). Khalid makes decision on his own, whether it’s popular or not,” he said.
On Monday, Dr Wan Azizah, who is PKR president said she would appoint her husband as her consultant and adviser, should she replace Khalid as menteri besar.
Dr Wan Azizah had said that the menteri besar’s post was meant for her husband in the first place, and that she would not hesitate to make him her consultant and adviser if she comes into power.
This was contrary to what Anwar had said before Hari Raya Aidilfitri, that he would not assume any role if Dr Wan Azizah becomes menteri besar.
Another political analyst Prof Dr Hoo Ke Ping said Anwar was the state’s economic advisor for the first and second term, and this was just his ploy to continue being an important figure in the state.
“It is important to note that Anwar could be worried about the Pas-Umno cooperation on various matters, thus he still wants to remain in the picture in Selangor to ensure that matters would still be in his control,” he said.
